Understanding the Dangers of Electrical Fire Damage

For many homeowners, fires seem like an afterthought until flames engulf their property. The truth is that fires can result from many sources, and it is vital that home- and business owners take preventative measures.

There are four causes of house fires that are particularly common in the United States:

  • Unattended stoves
  • Improper disposal of smoking materials
  • Candles that burn for hours unattended
  • Malfunctioning electrical wiring or components

When developing your fire prevention plan, be sure to consider these causes, and take measures to prevent them.

What Causes Electrical Fires?

A number of different household items can contribute to an electrical fire. Faulty wiring is one of the most common causes.

This was likely the case in a recent electrical fire that led to injuries to at least one person. As Q13 Fox reports, someone spotted the fire behind a TV set, most likely from the outlet or wires.

Modern entertainment systems likely contain more wiring than ever before, so it’s important to pay close attention to the condition of all active wires from TV sets, videogame consoles, DVD players and other gadgets.

Be attentive when untangling wires to avoid injury. Also, keep wires free of dust.

Places with extension cords or power strips are also prone to fires. Be sure to minimize their usage to reduce the chances of a fire. The more devices they are powering, the greater a chance for something to go wrong. Also, never leave cables plugged in unless you are using them; this is especially true for cellphone and laptop chargers.

If your home is at least 30 years old, schedule regular electrician inspections—at least twice per year. Old internal wiring can lead to a major fire.
