Storms Cause Landslides and Property Damage in Washington

Catastrophe welcomed Seattle into the New Year. A torrential storm resulted in landslides and major flooding throughout western Washington, forcing residents to evacuate their homes in Snoqualmie and along the coast. Property destruction was a very real threat, and according to the Yakima Herald, officials declared a state of emergency on the Quinault Indian Nation reservation.

Washington Floods Lead to Evacuations

King County suffered the worst damage. Water ran down the mountains into the Tolt and Snoqualmie River, and continued downstream to raise water levels for several days. Officials issued evacuation requests for residents in the area. The river became a Phase 4 flood, battering residential suburbs with dangerously high velocities and flooding many homes.

The National Weather Service warned residents to expect water torrents by the Snoqualmie River at Carnation, the Snohomish River by Monroe and Snohomish, the Stillaguamish River near Arlington, the Pilchuck River by Snohomish and the Puyallup River by Orting.

The Hoquiam Fire Department collaborated with the American Red Cross to open an emergency shelter for those displaced by landslides or flooding at Immanuel Baptist Church. Inmates had to be transported from a juvenile detention facility. The Quinault Reservation suffered multiple landslides, washouts and culvert failures, and the tribe was evacuated near midnight to the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino.

Near Quinault Village, the bridge from Highway 109 over the Moclips River washed away, causing major access and communication problems for the tribe. The property management division of Quinault ordered an urgent safety inspection of the buildings and infrastructure. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant to the lingering danger of further landslides, particularly along steep coastal bluffs and hillsides.

The western slopes of Cascades were issued an avalanche warning. Heavy rains fell on top of deep snows, resulting in unstable conditions.
